This article talks about how managers should be in any organization. The manager plays an important role in any organization and he will be the bridge between the employees and the Management. While selecting the Manager the organization should look at the attitude and some of the qualities which are required by the Manager. If the Manager is wrongly selected the Organization culture, business and the team of people will be affected badly.
Introduction
While selecting the manager the organization should look at the qualities, like attitude and the Previous experience, and about the Previous organization which he worked for. Generally while taking the Managers at different levels should be opted through referrals or through Recruitment companies. Why I am saying is while taking the managers the organization should be careful with their background and experience, if we select through these channels generally the resources should have Proven Records in the previous organizations.
The Importance and Qualities of a Manager -
Managers will be at different levels in any organization like Line Managers, Middle Management and Top Management. These People will play important roles based on their Role and Responsibilities.
In any Organization every year the organization works out the Yearly Goals and Short term Goals to achieve the Revenue or Financial Goals. Whereas goals are of three types, out of which one is Revenue goal, 2nd one is Delivery Goals and 3rd one is Personal Goals.
These goals will be set at the organization level and then distributed to the lower levels till the Line Managers from the Top Management. Actually the Revenue goals will be distributed from the Top Management ( Business Unit Heads) to the Middle Management ( Practice Heads). Generally these goals will not be applicable to the line Managers. Revenue goals will be reviewed at the Business Unit and Practice head levels and their salaries will be linked to the Revenue goals. If they don’t meet the Business goals their salaries will not be paid fully, only basic salaries will be paid. If they do consistently bad , the business heads will be sacked and replaced with the potential people to remain with the business.
The 2nd goal will be distributed from the Top to the Line Managers and it is more important to the Line Managers for their Appraisals. Managers appraisal is based on how much worth of Projects are delivered within the budget, Quality and Schedule, line Managers will focus more on deliveries instead of business. They will be interacting with the customers and reporting to the higher ups and working with the teams to meet the delivery goals..
The 3d goal is the Personal Goal, this goal is for everyone from the top to bottom till the Programmer. This goal is very important for each and everyone in the organization to develop your personality and their carear. It could be improvement of soft or Technical or Project Management or delivery skills.
One More quality which does not have all the Managers are Technological skills, actually many of the Managers are not expert on technologies, they will be dependent on the architects to take their decisions. Yes, it is Rare skill. Many of the Managers will come from the Management career path, very few people will come from the Technology career path who are experts in Technology, those people rarely opt for Management career path. If the Technology Career Path (TCP) people are interested in the Management career path and they are confident, then will prefer them to go the Management Career Path (MCP) or Project Management Career path (PCP). If the Technological People are coming MCP or PCP , they will have more Command on the teams as well on Subject, so that they can easily manage the teams as well as deliveries.

Career Path Selection
For each, everyone in the organization can have career path selection based on your experience and skill set. Career Path selection will not be set immediately when you join the company. At least you should have a minimum 8 to 10 Years experience in any organization to select for the career path. Why do you need so many years of experience to select a career path, you should have maturity in your field to decide on the career. Immediately when you join the organization you may not know anything, when you experience you will know a lot of things and then you can decide your career path and you can talk to the manager regarding the career path.
Career Paths are of three Types in any Organization, But this mainly intended for the Software Professionals. Same applies for the Many of the organizations in this world.
1. Management Career Path (MCP) - Management Career Path is intended for the People who are interested in managing the Group of People in terms Project deliveries, Appraisals, Trainings, Team building, Resource development, Customer Interaction. This Role purly People management role and you should forget about the Technical Roles like Programming, Architecting the Technical Solutions. But you are having Technological skills in addition to the Management skills, it is an added advantage to develop and guide the teams.
2. Technology Career Path (TCP) - Technology Career Path is intended for the People who are extremely good at Technology skills and they can grow in the Technology filed like Architects, Master architects, Solution architects and designing the software solutions in innovative ways.
3. Project Management Career Path (PCP) - Project Management Career Path is intended for the People who are good at Technology Skills and Management skills, who are good at Leadership Skills. This Intermediary Role between the TCP and MCP. This is a challenging Role and Critical Role where you will use Technology skills and Management Skills. People who are good at this skills they can move later on to Management Career Path (MCP) .
Career Path Selection is important when you come up that level to choose the career path.
Appraisals -
Appraisals will play an important role in appraising the person and that depends on the employee's Career. The Manager should judge the employee fairly while doing the appraisals, otherwise it spoils the careers of the employees and it impacts the delivery and Business. Maybe some time managers are favoring some people very close to them, but it does not matter. But managers should give a fair appraisal to those who are genuine and capable of having good appraisals.

1. The Managers should be fair and honest in doing the appraisals
2. The Managers should consider the employee intensions in their career path
3. The Managers should not dictate the employee Career and managers should allow them to choose their career and support them in building their career.
4. The Managers should suggest or help them to select their training for building the right career.
5. The Managers should nurture their career through training in any career path whichever they like.
6. The Managers should Plan the Carers who are extremely good and contributing to the Organization.
7. The Managers should market the Good Resources to the Customers or in the Organization.
8. The Managers are Successful when their teams are successful, Managers Performance will be judged based on the teams Performance not on the individual Performance.
9. Managers will play a crucial role between the customer and the organization.
10. Managers should have good negotiation and contracting skills.
